ThingMotel™ is a small application that registers components, or "things". The component manager was originally a part of QuickTime™, but has now been included in System 7.1. It is also available separately as the !ThingManager (the ! is silent) for use on machines that can't handle QuickTime but don't yet have 7.1.
You use ThingMotel by dropping files on top of it. It registers all the components defined by resources of type "thng" that it finds in the files, and at the same time unregisters all components with the same type, subtype, and attributes. Since it does this all at once, it will not work if you are trying to register more than one identical component.
The final result is pretty much the same as if you had put the "thng" file into your extensions folder and rebooted, except you would not have time to get another cup of coffee.
